This photo shows the Federal courthouse and post office, a multi-storied stone building located at 129 N. 10th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. The north side of the block contains a courtyard with walkways, a fountain, trees and lawn. Two horse-drawn wagons with "United States Mail" printed on the side stand before the center door. A piece of the negative is broken out of the bottom right corner.
It took five years (1874-1879) to build this limestome block, 4-story building. In 1906 a new court house and post office were completed on the other half of the block facing P Street. This building was turned over to the city and served as the Lincoln City Hall until 1969. The building is still used to house some city agencies.
According to Hoye's City Directory of Lincoln, 1900, businesses visible in the background of this picture include Mayer Brothers at 113 N. 10th Street which sold clothing, boots, and shoes; Burlington Route ticket office at 1000 O Street; and The Hub at 104 N. 10th Street..
