A large group of Rising City residents, including men, women, and children, is gathered in the dirt street in front of some of the town's buildings in this 5" x 3 1/2" black and white photograph. Trees with some of their leaves singed off line the street. Some pieces of lumber lie in the street in front of the townspeople.
The first big fire in Rising City happened on July 8, 1892. It occurred north of the railroad tracks on the east side of Main Street. The businesses destroyed were: A.P. Day Implement, F.M. Ross's drug store, Mollie Newcomer's millinery store, a brick hall, and Mrs. Gates's furniture store and restaurant. In this photograph, the town's Lutheran and Congregational churches can be seen in the background.
