Eleven students (eight girls and three boys) pose on a staircase in this 6 3/4" x 5" black and white photograph. The students stand in three rows, with the back two rows on the stairs, and the front row on the floor in front of the staircase. The boys wear dark suits, and the girls wear long dresses. All of the students hold diplomas, and the girls hold flowers as well. The students all are looking off to the side, rather than at the camera. A potted plant and the railings of the staircase are visible in the background.

Historical Notes
When Vinton School, located at 2120 Deer Park Boulevard in Omaha, Nebraska, opened in 1908, there were 735 students enrolled. The average number of students to a teacher was 52.6, and a teacher's salary was from $500 to $700 per year. During this period of time, many students completed their formal education with eighth grade. Many of the students who attended Vinton School at this time were immigrants or children of immigrants. Almost one quarter of Omaha's population was made of recent immigrants from 1900 to 1910. This percentage was significantly higher than the rest of the area or the national average. In 1900, most of the immigrants were from European countries.
