In this 6 1/2' x 4 1/2" black and white photograph, students, all of whom are girls, use the library at Walnut Hill School. Most of the students sit at tables, reading, but a few stand by a desk in the foreground of the photograph, waiting for the librarian seated at the desk to check out books to them. Bookshelves line the walls in the back of the room. The room has large wooden doors with a clock hanging on the wall above them. Three light fixtures hang from the ceiling.

Historical Notes
Walnut Hill Elementary School is located at 44th and Hamilton Streets in Omaha, Nebraska. The library at Walnut Hill School was one of the first elementary school libraries in Omaha. The library's first book was a copy of Peter Pan by James Barrie, a gift from a local business. When this photograph was taken, the building where this library was located was considered unsafe, and plans for a new library were being made. Students moved into the new structure, located just to the east of this building in November of 2007. Another building replaced this structure and opened in 2003.
