Color postcard (14 x 9 cm.) captioned "Union Pacific Shops, Grand Island, Neb." in the top left corner in red type. The Union Pacific Railroad shops in Grand Island, Nebraska show one large limestone building standing alongside double railroad tracks with two other buildings seen in the background. Railroad cars are visible inside the far building, awaiting repair. There are some horse and buggies visible and a fenced area on both sides of the tracks with trees inside the fence.
The Grand Island Union Pacific Railroad shop buildings were built in the 1880-1883 period. The U.P. shops and roundhouse were located on the east edge of Grand Island between the U.P. tracks and Highway 30. Railroad cars were built and repaired inside the shops. Only one portion of the U.P. shops was still standing in 2006. Source: Karen Keehr, Curator, Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, Grand Island, Nebraska.
