Color postcard (14 x 9 cm) with a view captioned "State Hospital for Insane, Lincoln, Neb." at the top in red type. It is a large white stone three story building, the foreground is green lawn with trees and plantings visible. There is a white border on the bottom of the card.
According to Addison E. Sheldon, in 1904 the State Hospital for the Insane ranked among the first institutions of the kind in the United States. It was capable of accommodating 600 patients. The original building was put into use April 17, 1871, and was at that time the only public institution owned by the state. It burned and was replaced soon after with the one seen in this image. The hospital was situated southwest of Lincoln and was surrounded by 880 acres of cultivated land. The buildings, together with the land connected with them were of over $750,000 in value.
