The oldest banking institution in Nebraska is the United States National Bank located in the center of this image at the northwest corner of 16th & Farnam. The building seen here was their fourth building built and opened in 1915, on the site where their third building had been located. The building was razed in the 1990s and was replaced with a parking garage. United States National Bank was the successor of a land agency opened in 1855 by Joseph H. Millard and Company. The company changed its name on October 2, 1883, when it opened as the United States National Bank. Farnam street runs east-west and was originally spelled "Farnham." It was named in honor of Henry Farnam, Banker of Hartford, CT, one of the promoters of the Rock Island Railroad. Farnam Street was the original "main street" of Omaha.
