Department store project, Longfellow School kindergarten class
Description
Two boys and three girls are standing inside a wooden playhouse in a classroom in this 9-3/8" x 7-3/8" black and white photograph. The playhouse has a counter in the front with items arranged on it to imitate department store displays.
Longfellow School was located at 1st & K Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1901 to 1931. Built in 1890, this school was known as "1st & K School" for the first decade of its life. However, in 1900 its teachers petitioned the Lincoln Board of Education to change the name to Longfellow in honor of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The school was torn down in 1931.
