This 4" x 6" black and white photograph shows the residence of Lucius D. Richards and his wife, Carro, located at 810 East Fifth Street in Fremont, Nebraska. The rambling structure has a modern, classical appearance and an effort has been made to play down its former Victorian characteristics. The few remaining traces of scroll-sawn ornamentation are painted white to blend with the home's exterior. Corner windows and a triangular gable hint at earlier Queen Anne style elements. Lathed spindles are still incorporated into the porch railings but the more modern concrete is used for the steps which approach the front door. The home has three visible brick chimneys. The raised porch is equipped for relaxation with assorted chairs and rockers, as well as a hammock. A curved driveway with brick curbing approaches the Queen Anne style porte-cochere entrance on the side of the house. The sagging, original wooden steps seen here suggest that this carriage entrance is seldom used for guests. The grounds are landscaped with well-established shade trees and a grassy lawn. Some flowers are planted in a bed near the driveway. A concrete sidewalk passes in front of the property.
