The Joseph T. May residence entry hall at 1129 North Nye Avenue is viewed from the sitting room. A section of the open, spindled staircase is visible. This scene also affords glimpses into the library with its painted interior shutters, rocking chairs and dictionary stand, as well as a corner of the parlor. Here are seen a patented platform rocking chair and an armless, upholstered easy chair. These two rooms are entered through large double door entries. The doors are slid back into their wall pockets creating ample space for room to room movement. Curtain rods draped with fabric of chintz or cretonne and tasseled fringe hang in the openings as portieres. The most details are seen in the sitting room and include enameled wood work, wall to wall carpeting, and a picture rail. The wallpaper is a vine pattern with a floral frieze and bold, geometric patterned ceiling paper. The brass light fixture is combination gas and electric. The gas burners are covered with etched glass, upright shades while the electric bulbs are covered by pleated milk glass shades pointing down.
