Description
This 1870s Carte de Viste photograph shows the original First Methodist Episcopal Church building in Fremont, on the corner of Eighth and Broad Streets. The imposing edifice contrasts greatly with the stark prairie surroundings which include stacks of prairie hay, a simple frame structure and barren space. Traces of the Gothic Revival architectural style are evident in the building's construction. These include the board-and-batten siding, diamond paned window sash, and the small roof appearing over the flat-topped windows. Gothic arches have been incorporated into the bell tower louvers, windows, and the front entrance. Three unidentified ladies, wearing hooped skirts, appear near the front entrance. Not so elegant is the open-door privy appearing at the rear of the building next to a frame fuel shed.
