Two simple false fronted shops, one housing the Y.M.C.A. reading room are the focus of this black and white exposure. The location of these shops is the northeast corner of Fifth and F (Park) Streets. The shops face south on Fifth Street. The tall brick wall is the rear portion of May Brothers Wholesale Grocery. The corner business is identified as a wholesale and retail flour establishment according to the painted sign on its false front. Additional lettering on the building's side indicates it is also a source for not only flour but corn, oats and feed as well.
Although the owner's name does not appear on this flour store at 100 East Fifth, it was, as late as 1897, the business location of Arthur Truesdale. The 1898 Fremont City Directory gives the address of the Y.M.C.A. as 100-106 East Fifth, indicating this building had become a portion of the Y.M.C.A. complex. The directory for 1901-1902 lists the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium and reading room at the corner of Fifth and F (Park) Streets. These structures were razed and replaced by a modern brick structure built in 1907-1908.
