This 2" x 6-1/2" black and white photograph shows the town of Fairmont after a fire. Men stand in front of buildings gutted by the fire. Chairs, other pieces of furniture, and remnants of items damaged by the fire clutter the streets. Printed on the photograph is: View of Fire, Fairmont, Neb., April 18, 1904, W.K. Brewster, Artist.
The fire on Fairmont Avenue (the main street) in 1901 destroyed Miller Drug Company, R.G Hall's Hardware, Gorey's Racket Store & Tin Shop, and Dr. Ashby's and Dr. Horner's offices. Also destroyed in May 1901 was the jewelry store of C.D. Davis and Mr. Decker's Barber shop. When the hose was attached to fight the fire, it was discovered that there was less than 3 feet of water in the tank because of a leak. The only reason Fairmont remained standing is there was no wind.
