Sod school, District #68, Cheyenne County, Nebraska
Description
Children and their teacher stand in front of a sod schoolhouse in this colorized 9-1/2" x 5-1/2" photograph. The corners and roof are reinforced with wooden planking and the foundation appears to be made of stone. Two multi-paned glass windows are set into one side of the building. The four children in front are, from left to right: Ruth Bates, Mary Olson, Lillian Olson, Whitman Olson. In the middle row are: Bertha Olson, Ella Olson, Alfred Rice, Harold Michelson, Oliver Larson, Dena Michelson. And in the back row: Edith Olson, Minnie Rice, Oscar Olson, and teacher Tillie Davis. Standing slightly apart from the group is the photographer, Otto Olson.
Otto Olson, the photographer standing to the right of the group, wanted to be in the picture so he ran a string from the camera to a post to snap the photograph. He developed the picture as well.
