Historical Notes
Dr. S. B. Manning was a practicing veterinarian and Mayor of David City from 1940-1950. He spear-headed the construction of the David City Auditorium and Memorial Field. Dale Nichols, son of John Dale and Edith Pollman Nichols, grew up on the family farm west of David City, Nebraska. From an early age, Dale wanted to be an artist and after finishing high school he went to Chicago and studied at the Art Institute. He became an internationally-known artist, famous for his rural landscapes. His paintings are in many public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Chicago Art Institute. The photograph features Dale presenting one of his paintings to the Mayor of David City, S. B. Manning, for display in the newly-constructed David City Auditorium.
