Several bushes are next to the foundation and a few small trees are enclosed in a large yard, surrounded by an iron and wood-post fence. Mrs. Rathje, wearing a floor-length, long-sleeve dark dress is climbing the front porch steps. Henry, wearing dark slacks, shirt, vest and derby hat is walking through the gate.

Henry Rathje was born in Germany circa 1857. His wife, Thelma, was born in Germany circa 1858. They immigrated to the United States in 1884 and lived on a farm near Shelby, Nebraska, in Polk County, Hackberry Township.
