An 8"x10" glass plate negative, portrait photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Welte, David City, Nebraska, and their seven sons. Mr. Welte is wearing a mustache, 3-piece suit, white shirt, knotted tie and high-top shoes with a lapel pin and watch chain visible. Mrs. Welte is wearing a long, dark skirt and white, long-sleeved, lace-trimmed blouse with stand collar. They are seated in straight-backed wood chairs with their youngest son standing between them and the other boys standing behind. The two youngest boys are wearing double-breasted suit jackets, knee-length pants with dark leggings and high-top shoes, white shirts and knotted ties. The older boys are wearing suits with white shirts and knotted tie, one with a lapel pin, two with handkerchiefs in their breast pockets. |

Historical Notes |
Joseph Welte was born in Green County, New York on June 23, 1856. He married Nancy Grafft in Woodford County, Illinois on January 18, 1883. Nancy was born in Woodford County, Illinois, on March 19, 1862. In 1887, Joseph and Nancy moved to Butler County, Nebraska, with their two young sons, Louis and John. They farmed south of David City and had five more sons: Roy D. and Ralph M., twins; George; Paul and Herbert. In the early 1900's they moved to David City where they built a house on a large plot of land in the southeast part of the town. For a number of years they operated a small dairy and sold milk and butter to the city residents. Three of their sons served in the Nebraska National Guard regiment during the Mexican insurrection in 1916 and the two youngest sons served in World War I. One of the sons served on the City Council for a number of years and also as Mayor for one term. Their son John was at one time the oldest volunteer fireman in the state of Nebraska. |
