Photo of nursing students looking at two mannequins
Description
This black and white photograph shows nursing students watching their instructors at the Immanuel Deaconess Institute's nursing school. Their nursing uniforms and caps are stark white. Writing on the back of the photo indicates Kathleen Cheney is in the far corner of the room. She and another teacher are bent over two beds, each of which has a small child-sized mannequin covered by white sheets. A student stands beside each of them. A nightstand separates the two beds from each other. The students are sitting in wooden tablet-arm chairs. Part of a wooden desk is seen on the right, with two open books on it. The windows behind the students are covered with shades and sheer curtains. The back of the photo has "Murray Studio" stamped on it.
Original format: black and white photographic print, 9.5 x 7.5 inches.
Historical Notes
At the time of the photo, Kathleen Cheney was the first teacher to hold such a position, formerly held by only deaconesses. In 1958, she was promoted to Director of the Immanuel Nursing School. She remained the Director until 1976, when the school merged with another institution and the name changed. During World War II, some students were nurse cadets under a wartime program to provide more military nurses. Half of the school was paid for by the government.
