Description | The title, Panoramic Views of Omaha, appears on the lower left front of this gray toned booklet that is 22.9 x 11.8 cm. The booklet has eight panoramic views of Omaha plus Omaha Facts in a Nutshell information on the final page. The view on the cover behind the title block is a birds-eye view photo looking north between 17th Street on the left and 16th Street on the right. From left to right, the second building on the west side of 17th Street, at the southwest corner of 17th and Harney, is the Young Men's Christian Association building. Across the street, to the north, is the Douglas County Courthouse. Beyond it the clock tower of the Omaha City Hall is seen at the northeast corner of 18th & Farnam Streets. Moving to the right, the east side of the Bee Building is seen at the northwest corner of 17th & Farnam Streets between the Courthouse and Boyd's Theatre. Boyd's Theatre, which has the name printed on the back or south side of its building, is on the southeast side of 17th and Harney Streets. The large building with the cupola is the New York Life Insurance building at the northeast corner of 17th & Farnam Streets. The building to the right of the Boyd's Theatre building is the Orchard & Wilhelm department store building at the northwest corner of 16th & Howard Streets. The clock tower of the Post Office, located behind on the west side of 16th Street, between Dodge and Capitol Avenue, is seen to the right. Across 16th Street the building with the conical top is the Paxton Block at the northeast corner of 16th & Farnam Streets. The tallest building in the image is the City National Bank building at the southeast corner of 16th & Harney Streets. The large white building in the distance to the right of that is the Union Pacific Headquarters building at the northeast corner of 15th & Dodge Streets. In the foreground is the Union Outfitting Company building located at the southeast corner of 16th & Jackson Streets. The tall building partially seen to the far right is the Woodmen of the World building at the southeast corner of 14th & Farnam Streets. Opening up the booklet reveals panoramas twice the length of the front cover bordered by white with the title caption at the bottom center. The following nine images and final page of text are displayed in this manner. The first image in the booklet is titled, Panorama of Omaha's Retail District Taken From Top of Union Pacific Building, located at the northeast corner of 15th & Dodge Streets. This image looks southwest with 15th Street running south on the far left and Dodge Street running west on the right. From left to right the Orpheum is seen with its name on the building at the southwest corner of 15th & Harney; the tall building to the right is the City National Bank at the southeast corner of 16th & Harney; the large building with the conical top is the Paxton Block at the northeast corner of 16th & Farnam; the Brandeis Building is located at the southwest corner of 16th & Douglas and pedestrians are seen walking along 16th Street; the Brandeis Theatre building is directly behind at the southwest corner of 17th and Douglas. To the south of the Brandeis building, the cupola of the New York Life building at the northeast corner of 17th & Farnam and the clock tower of the City Hall at the northeast corner of 18th & Farnam Streets are seen. To the right of center the tall building with flags on top is the Fontenelle Hotel at the northwest corner of 18th & Douglas Streets. On the north side of Dodge Street, in the distance at 20th Street, is Omaha High School and in the foreground is the Post Office with the clock tower located on the west side of 16th between Dodge and Capitol Avenue. The second image in the booklet is titled, Panorama of Omaha's Wholesale District, Freight Depots, Smelter and Shops, taken from the top of Metz Brewery, which was located at 601 Leavenworth, looking north northwest. From left to right: the tracks at the far left are running down Leavenworth Street to the west; the Nebraska Moline Plow Company at 808 Leavenworth, behind it is the Paxton & Gallagher Company building at the southeast corner of 10th & Jones, wholesalers of groceries and hardware; the Wright and Wilhelmy Company building at the northeast corner of 10th & Jackson, wholesalers of hardware; the John Deere Plow Company building, on the west side of 9th from Howard to Harney Streets, has the deer on roof; J. I. Case Plow Works at 814-818 Jackson Street; Standard Furnace and Supply Company at 411-413 S. 10th Street. The two long low buildings that are oriented north-south are the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy freight depots; the smoking stacks are from the American Smelting and Refining Company plant north of Dodge Street along the Missouri River; the Douglas Street Bridge is crossing the Missouri River. In the foreground, south of the railroad yards, the long low building with the clerestory roof and eight sky lights is the Union Pacific freight house. There are ice-cooled refrigerator cars. The two tall buildings in the distance on the left side of the image look like they have been added to the image after the photo was taken. The third image is titled, Panorama of Union Pacific Shops and American Smelting and Refining Company plant, taken from top of Loose-Wiles Biscuit Co. Factory, located at 1202-1204 Davenport Street and looking east. The street running parallel with the bottom of the photo is 12th Street. The buildings and smoke stacks beyond, along the Missouri River, belong to the American Smelting and Refining Company. At the bottom left is People's Ice and Cold Storage Company at 1224 Chicago Street. Above it is the Union Pacific shops office building with the awnings and the landscaping on the south side lawn. The building in the foreground is the Illinois Central and Wabash joint freight house. The building at the right end of this is the office at the southwest corner of 11th and Chicago. The curved building with windows, between the second and third smoke stack, is the back wall of the roundhouse. The tall building at the far right is the Gordon Fireproof Warehouse Company located at 219-223 N. 11th Street at the southeast corner of 11th & Davenport. The fourth image in the booklet is titled, Panorama of South Omaha Stock yards with packing Houses in the Background. Taken from Updike Elevator, exact location unknown, looking south, southeast. The foreground is filled with railroad tracks and train cars. The town of South Omaha is seen to the left, the bridge over the railroad tracks is the L Street Bridge. In the right center is the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy freight depot at the northeast corner of 30th & L Street. On the right side of the image are the stock pens for the South Omaha Stock Yards. Packing plant smoke stacks are seen belching smoke, one in the distance and one in the foreground. The fifth image in the booklet is titled, Panorama of Wholesale District Looking Toward the Missouri River. Taken From the Top of the Woodmen of the World Building, located at the southeast corner of 14th & Farnam Streets, looking east with Farnam Street running east toward the Missouri River, seen in the distance. There are several company names visible on buildings including, from left to right, Beebe & Runyan Furniture Company, Nebraska National Bank, Vienna Hotel, Central Implement Company, Omaha Crockery Company, John Deere Plow Company, American Hand-Sewed Shoe Company, Inter-State Rubber Company, Mandy Lee, Geo. H. Lee Company Poultry & Stock Growers Supplies, Burkley Envelope Company, Kingman Plow Company, Omaha Hotel Supply, and Fairmont. The sixth image in the booklet is the longest panorama consisting of both pages in the middle of the booklet and is titled, General Panorama of Omaha From The High School To St. Joseph's Hospital, Taken From the Clarkson Memorial Hospital, which was located at 21st and Howard Street and looking from the north to the east and to the south. From left to right the second large building on the horizon is Omaha High School located at the northwest corner of 20th and Dodge Streets; the steeple of First Methodist Church, at the southeast corner of 20th & Davenport Streets; the next church is St. Mary Magdalene Church at the southeast corner of 18th and Dodge; the clock tower, behind the white building, with three peaked features is the Post Office at 16th & Dodge; the tall clock tower just left of the center of the image is on City Hall at the northeast corner of 18th and Farnam; the building with the cupola is the New York Life building at the northeast corner of 17th and Farnam; the Douglas County Courthouse is the large white building just to the right of the center of the image located between 17th & 18th and Farnam and Harney Streets; the tall building to the right of the courthouse is the Woodmen of the World building at the southeast corner of 14th & Farnam, the next tall building is the City National Bank building at the southeast corner of 15th and Harney; Howard Street is seen running east and the west, wide, side of the Flat Iron building is seen. There are several small buildings and homes to the far right and St. Joseph's Hospital is located at 10th and Castelar. The seventh image is, Panoramic View of the Omaha High School and O.H.S. (Omaha High School) Cadet Battalion, looking northwest from the corner of 20th & Dodge at cadets standing in rows in front of the Omaha High School. Enlarged pictures of two cadets are on either side of the image. The eighth image is, Panorama of Lake at Hanscom Park, and shows a fountain at the right side, lake in the foreground and tree lined park behind. The next page is blank. The final two pages have Omaha Facts in a Nut-Shell, including information about history and government, trade territory, population, industries, public service, railroads, banks and hotels. The back page says: Compliments of Publicity Bureau of the Omaha Commercial Club, and indicates that all photographs and engravings were made by the Photo and Engraving Departments of the Omaha Bee (newspaper), Omaha, Nebraska, copyright 1914. |
