Description	The information from the center of the title page says "Map of the Missouri River, from surveys made, in accordance with acts of Congress approved June 18, 1878 and March 3, 1879, under the direction of Major Chas. R. Suter, Corps of Engineers, U.S.A. by D. W. Wellman, Asst. Engr., Reduced from large sheets by D. C. H. Humphreys, C. E., Principal Draughtsman." Scale of Maps 1 inch to 1 mile 1/63360. Scale of Index 1/500,000." On the left side of the title page is a section labeled "Table of Distances From the Mouth to" followed by a listing of locations along the Missouri River and the distance in miles. The list starts at Jamestown Landing (7.3 miles) and ends at Ft. Randall (978.8 miles) which appears on sheet XXXIII (33). Major points on sheets XXXIV (34) through XL (40) not indicated on the Table of Distances include Chamberlin on sheet XXXVII (37), Fort Thompson on sheet XXXVIII (38) and Pierre on sheet XL (40). On the right side of the title page is a section labeled "Reference" which gives information about the section of the river and the dates the surveys took place. Surveys were done between September 2, 1878 and October 21, 1881. Below it is a section labeled "Conventional Signs" which appear on the map, including, railway, common road, fence, county line, state line, sand, willows, cottonwood, section corners, church, cemetery, mill, terrace, oak, swamp, lakes & ponds. A note below says that the figures in the River, opposite Towns and Landings, are distances in miles from the mouth. The title page is followed by four index sheets of the Missouri River. The index sheets are numbered in the top right corner with the word Index followed by a Roman numeral starting with I and ending with IV. Each index sheet shows a portion of the Missouri River from the Mouth of the Missouri north of St. Louis, Missouri, to just west of Ft. Hale in Dakota Territory. Each index sheet has the Missouri River broken into rectangular segments that have a Roman numeral at the top of the rectangle. These Roman numerals refer to the sheets that follow which are numbered in the top right corner of the sheet with a Roman numeral from sheet I (1) to sheet XL (40). Index sheet IV (4) indexes sheets through XXXVII (37). There is no index page for the final sheets which are XXXVIII (38), XXXIX (39), and XL (40). All sheets after the title page are titled "Missouri River" at the top center and have a scale. Sheets are yellowed with age and text and drawings are in black. They appear to have been originally bound or folded and are approximately 37 x 65 cm or slightly smaller. They are unfolded and are encapsulated in Mylar protective sheets. They are in fragile condition with edges crumbling and breaking and some have been repaired with tape. Some sheets have been ink stamped "Omaha Public Library Reference Department.
