They are attending the funeral of August Kuntz, a professor of German at Union College. The church is a large structure with many gables and five chimneys. There is snow on the ground, and the people in line are dressed in winter coats and hats. Several horses hitched to wagons and carriages can be seen near the crowd of people. Many houses are visible in the background, as is a great deal of open space.
