This 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" black and white photograph of a classroom shows students sitting at their wooden desks with a teacher standing at the back of the room. The students appear to be working on a writing lesson. The classroom has blackboards lining the walls and a door with a transom above it for ventilation. Framed pictures and a clock adorn the walls of the room, and a potted plant rests on a bookcase.

Historical Notes
These students attended the "old Florence School", erected in 1890 by the village of Florence at 8525 N. 31st Street. In 1917, Florence village was annexed by Omaha, making the Florence school part of the Omaha Public School District. In 1962, the old building was retired, and in the fall of 1963, students moved into the "new" Florence School at North 36th and King Streets. The street in front of the original location is still unpaved, and the foundation of the school is still visible in the empty lot.
