Description
Color postcard (14 x 9 cm.) with an exterior view of St. Adalbert's Church and School at 2619 South 31st Street in Omaha, Nebraska. 'Kostel a Skola Sv. Vojtecha' is Czech for 'St. Adalbert's Church and School': "kostel" = "church"; "a" = "and"; "skola" = "school"; "Sv." = "St."; "Vojtecha" = "Adalbert".
In September 1916, 40 Czech families petitioned the Omaha Archbishop for permission to form a new Catholic parish. On October 10, 1917, St. Adalbert's was incorporated. This was the last parish in Omaha allowed to form as a "national" parish with no physical boundaries but serving a specific nationality. The new facility on 31st & Wright Streets was dedicated September 12, 1919. The adjacent school opened in the fall of 1919 with 69 students.
