Edward Creighton made his fortune from the laying of transcontinental telegraph lines during the 1850s and 1860s. After his death his widow, Mary Lucretia Creighton, saw to it that some of his wealth was used to create Creighton University. The school opened in 1878 and has been run by the Jesuits since its inception. The middle section of the building with the bell tower was built in 1878. The south wing to the left was added in 1889 and the north wing was added in 1902. Edward Creighton's brother John also contributed financially to the school during the late nineteenth century, particularly to the John A. Creighton Medical College that was established in 1892.
