Cut velvet portieres with heavy fringe frame this interior view of the parlor at the Robert S. Somers residence, 1015 Somers Avenue. Young Lester A. Somers is seated at the parlor center table intently studying a book. An embroidered felt lambrequin covers the table top and on the lower shelf the photograph album is visible. A floral arrangement in a Bristol glass vase also ornaments the table. The slate fireplace mantle is decorated with incised lines and ebonized trim. The large over-mantle mirror is framed in wood which has Eastlake style details. A three tiered cast iron clock sits on the mantle with a pair of iron candlesticks which have marble bases. Assorted photographic portraits are also seen here. The parlor suite is a matched set in the Eastlake style and is upholstered in figured velvet. A heavy, upholstered rocker from the 20th century contrasts with the more ornate Eastlake pieces. The ebonized coal hod stands next to the fireplace. The carpeting is floral and an oriental type throw rug is on the hearth near the cast iron fireplace fender. The walls are papered with a scrolled pattern and a narrow, contrasting border separates this paper from the gilt plaster picture rail. A wide, boldly patterned frieze coordinates with the papered walls and in turn is topped with crown molding which is painted two colors. A lace lambrequin tops the window which also has interior wooden shutters.
