Historical Notes
Lowry Wimberly, 1890-1959, taught in the English Department at the University of Nebraska from 1925-1956. Wimberly was the founding editor of the literary magazine Prairie Schooner. Wimberly drew a number of budding writers and students of writing into his orbit. He inspired them to do their best work and helped them to better understand their craft. Mari Sandoz, Loren Eiseley, crime novelist Jim Thompson, poet Weldon Kees, and folklorist Benjamin Botkin were just a few of his distinguished friends and students. He helped bring the literary regionalism of the Midwest to national attention at the same time as artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood brought attention to regionalist themes in the arts.
