Historical Notes
John was born June 25, 1924, the son of Edward and Sadie Bagnall McVay. His parents had moved to David City from Clarinda, Iowa, in 1917 and established a furniture store and mortuary. He attended the local public high school and was inducted into the Army in February, 1943. He later joined the Army Air Force, training as a bombardier and was honorably discharge in March, 1946. He married Lila Bartels in December, 1945. John began clerking in the men's department of Schweser's Department Store in downtown David City after his military discharge. In June, 1948, John and Lila bought Tillma's Clothing store in partnership with John's father and renamed the business McVay's Clothing. He sold the business in 1987 and retired. He died September 13, 2002.
