Historical Notes
Clara Hanner was born in Butler County, Nebraska, July 1, 1881, to Philip and Maranda (Miranda) Hanner, who farmed east of David City and raised their family of seven sons and one daughter. Clara attended school in rural Butler County and later received a teaching certificate at the University of Nebraska. She taught in Butler County schools for 10 years. In 1921 she was married to Raymond Piers who had imigrated to Butler County from Belgium. They farmed near Garrison, raising one daughter, Wandea. They eventually took over the Hanner farm and cared for Clara's aging parents. Raymond died in 1941, but Clara continued as a prominent farmer and livestock feeder until her death in March 1964.
