Three boys are dressed in white blouses with large peter pan collars, wide ruffle trim with dark bows at the neck, dark, knee-length pants, dark leggings and white shoes with ribbon ties. The four girls are dressed in a variety of dresses, all with large fabric bows in their hair, standing in front of a painted backdrop of a forest scene. |

Carl Hickstein was born June 22, 1871 in Germany. He married Augusta Dahm August 10, 1895, and they immigrated to the U.S. on their honeymoon. Carl farmed in Butler County, Nebraska, for 28 years. Carl and Augusta are photographed with the oldest of their ten children. In 1923 Carl and Augusta moved to Surprise, Nebraska, where Carl worked as a janitor for the Methodist Church and Surprise School. They moved to San Diego, California, in 1937. Carl died March 3, 1944, and is buried in the David City Cemetery. Augusta Dahm was born in Germany, February 6, 1875. She died February 18, 1961. Hans (John) Carl Hickstein was born Mary 27, 1902, in Rising City. He married Minna Hohndorff. Hans died July 7, 1968, in California. Martha Emma Hickstein was born January 26, 1900, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She married Elias Charles Purdy and raised three daughters. She died March 15, 1979, in San Diego. Paul Frederick Hickstein was born May 1, 1906, in David City. He married Juanita Barron and raised three children. He died January 18, 1971 in Napa, California. Fred W. Hickstein was born February 2, 1908, in David City, and died July 22, 1978, in San Diego. Katherine Hickstein was born March 27, 1898, in Rising City, Nebraska. She married George McIlvain in 1916. She worked at the David City Hospital for 25 years and raised three children. She died July 14, 1979, and is buried in the David City Cemetery. Ida Hickstein was born May 4, 1904, in Millerton, Nebraska. She married Arthur Grubaugh, September 26, 1922, and they raised six children. She owned and operated Ida's Cafe in David City, 1956-1969. Ida died December 24, 1986, and is buried in the David City cemetery. Anna Hickstein was born in Nebraska, June 22, 1896. She married Roy Avery Ransom and they raised two sons. Anna died December 7, 1974, in Toledo, Oregon. |
