Back, l-r; Marian, b. 12/27/1884, d. 12/01,1977; Gilbert (Gib), b. 08/05/1878, d. 04/06/1927; Henry, b. 1/25/1876, d. 11/02/1953; Lillian, b. 9/9/1873, d. 3/30/1959. Middle, l-r: George, b. 5/7/1870, d. 5/23/1939; David Adam (Ad), b. 4/16/1849, d. 4/27/1948; Elizabeth, b. 6/27/1852, d. 2/19/1930. Front, l-r: Sarah (Sadie), b. 4/19/1882, d. 9/11/1927; Flossie, b. 2/11/1887, d. 11/15/1976. The five women are dressed in a variety of dresses with stand collars and long, gathered sleeves. Several of them have necklaces, brooches and watches pinned to their bodices. The four men are dressed formally in dark suits with white shirts. Three of the men are wearing bow ties; one man is wearing a knotted tie. Ad has a mustache and watch chain pinned to his vest. Three men are wearing lapel pins. |

Historical Notes |
David Adam and Elizabeth (Ad & Lizzie) Minick were among the early pioneers of Butler County, Nebraska. Their branch of the family dropped one "n" from the Minnick name, spelling their name Minick. However, the photographer's ledger has the name spelled as Minnick and the census shows Gilbert as Minnick. In 1870, Ad & Lizzie moved from Allamakee County, Iowa, by covered wagon and oxen with their infant son, George, David's parents (Adam and Elizabeth Guntner Minnick) and others to Seward, Nebraska, until they could locate homesteads. Both David and his father homesteaded 80 acres each in Summit Township in Butler County, near Rising City, in 1871. Their daughter, Flossie, recalled grasshoppers in the fields and how they swarmed on her father, eating the shirt off his back. Ad & Lizzie lived to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1919 with about 150 friends and relatives at their home near Rising City, Nebraska. |
