Historical Notes |
In 1882, Frank Hinze was an 18-year-old baker in Germany and was about to be called to serve in the military when he decided to emigrate to the United States. He had acquaintances in Butler County, Nebraska, and wanted to continue baking but had trouble converting the weights and measures of the metric system to the standard weights and measures used in the local bakery. Instead, he worked as a hired hand on a farm. In 1883 Frank's parents, brother, and three sisters immigrated to Butler County and they purchased a homestead. Frank kept up correspondence with Agnes Dolgner, whose family lived close to the Hinze family in Germany. He convinced her to emigrate and they were married July 8, 1889. They purchased a farm one mile east of his parent's farm and raised 5 children: Alice Hinze Klingemann, Richard, Agnes Hinze Piller, Ervin and Emma Hinze Ostermeier. Frank died in February, 1933, and Agnes died in December, 1953. |
