Residence at 18th and Douglas Streets during street lowering project
Description
A house stands at the very edge of a man-made bank of dirt in this black and white lantern slide. The bank is a result of a project to lower Omaha's streets, and the house, located at the corner of 18th and Douglas Streets, is waiting to be moved to the lower street level. The house has a covered front porch and two chimneys, and it is surrounded by trees with bare branches. Two men are standing on the ground at the new, lower street level.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, several street re-grading projects took place in Omaha. In certain areas, the street level was lowered. Dirt from these areas was used to raise the grade in other sections of the city.
