Object Description

Title	Map of the Missouri River: from its mouth to Three Forks, Montana
Description	The atlas (28 x 58 cm) is a reproduction of an original published in 1892-1895. Pages are green with black type. The first page is the title page. On the center of the title page is "Map of the Missouri River from its mouth to Three Forks, Montana, in eighty-four sheets and nine index sheets published in 1892-1895 by the Missouri River Commission created by Act of Congress July 5, 1884." The scale for the eighty four sheets and for the nine index sheets is omitted. Under the title there is a list of Commissioners including: A. Mackenzie, C. R. Suter, O. H. Ernst, W. J. Broatch, C. J. Allen, W. R. King, R. S. Berlin. Secretaries in charge of surveys listed are: W. L. Fisk, T. A. Bingham, J. C. Sanford, J. F. McIndoe. On the left side of the title page there is information in a section titled "Authorities" regarding surveys from which the map was made. On the right top corner of the page there is a section titled "Topographical and Hydrographical surveys were made as follows:" and provides an index listing the Locality, the Date of Survey, and Number (No.) of Sheet that it appears in the atlas. Dates of survey range from 1878 to 1892. Below this in the bottom right corner of the title page is a sectional called "Conventional Signs" with a legend for these features found on the maps: triangulation station (secondary), saw mill, cemetery, road, fence, levee, bench, orchard, forest (deciduous), forest (evergreen), bushes, willows, bench mark, church, section corner, railway, county & resn. line, state line, dike, cultivated, sand bar, grass, lake & marsh, and bluffs. The title page is followed by a page titled "Table of Distances Missouri River from its mouth to Three Forks, Montana" with headings for Localities, Miles and Sheet number. The table is presented in four Roman numeral sections each starting at mile zero. Section I begins at the Mouth of the Missouri River, Section II at Mouth of the Big Sioux River, Section III at Bismarck (R.R. bridge) and Section IV at Fort Benton (bridge). The Table of Distances page is followed by nine index sheets of the Missouri River. The index sheets are numbered in the top right corner with a Roman numeral starting with I and ending with IX. Each index sheet shows a portion of the Missouri River from the Mouth of the Missouri north of St. Louis, Missouri, to Three Forks in Montana. Each index sheet has the Missouri River broken into rectangular segments that have a Roman numeral at the top of the rectangle. These Roman numerals refer to the sheets that follow. These sheets are numbered in the top right and lower right corner of the sheet with an Arabic number and in the top right with a Roman numeral from sheet 1 (I) to sheet 83 (LXXXIII). There is no 84th sheet as indicated in the title. Sheets 22, 23 and 24 were removed from the atlas and digital replacements for the missing sheets were provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District Library. Call number on the atlas is Neb Ref 912.78 M 32 1892a and there are stamps indicating it was a acquired as a gift on June 21, 1982.
