Object Description

Title	Atlas of Douglas and Sarpy Counties, Nebraska, containing townships of the county; maps of Nebraska, United States and world, farm directory, analysis of U. S. land surveys
Description	The 1920 atlas is 34 x 44 cm and shows some water damage along the right edge. Page numbers are indicated in top right or left corners of each page. It starts with Page 3 "Topographical Map of Douglas and Sarpy Counties" which is a color map of Douglas and Sarpy Counties with names of townships, and a reference for locating railroads, schools, wagon roads, churches, cemeteries, houses, and creeks. The scale is 1/2 inch to 1 mile. The year 1920 has been written below the title in pencil. On it and on each page the Anderson Publishing Company, map and atlas publisher, Des Moines, Iowa, is credited as the publisher. Through pages 29, the Douglas County township maps are followed by farmers' directories for precincts. Sarpy County township maps and farmers' directories begin on page 29. The farmers' directories are an alphabetical listing by last name of person in the precinct, section, acres, name of wife and children, years in county, and if they are an owner or renter. Township maps include references to locations of railroads, schools, wagon roads, churches, corporation line, houses, creeks, rural routes and the scale is 1 3/4 inches to 1 mile. There is a decorative border surrounding the outside edges of the maps. Omaha advertisers are on Pages 24, 38 and 40. Pages 41 and 44 contain a Gazetteer of Nebraska Towns showing populations based on the 1910 federal census. Pages 42 and 43 are the west and east half of a colored "Map of Nebraska" scale 16 1/4 miles to 1 inch which was edited, engraved and published by the Geographical Publishing Co., Chicago, Illinois with references to canals and congressional districts. Pages 45 and 48 are an alphabetical "Index of all the Chief Towns and Cities of Over 2,000 The United States" and their population and on Page 48 a list of states and their total population. Population statistics are from the 1910 Federal Census. Pages 46 and 47 contain a colored map of the United States scale 145 miles to 1 inch and engraved and published by the Geographical Publishing Company, Chicago, Ill. There is a scale and information to determine parcel post rates. Page 49 is a "Topographical Relief Map of the Panama Canal and Surrounding Territory" scale of 9 5/9 miles to 1 inch as proposed by latest plans and an "Axial Profile of Proposed Lock Canal." Pages 50 and 51 are a map of "The World on Mercator's Projection" with a listing of principal countries and their respective square miles and principal cities with populations. Page 52 has portraits and information about key persons in the Panama Canal including James Monroe, Woodrow Wilson, Count Ferd. De Lesseps, Col. George W. Goethals, John Hay, John F. Wallace, Col. W. C. Gorgas, John F. Stevens, Theodore Roosevelt, and William H. Taft. At the bottom of the page is a chart of "Distances Saved by Panama Canal" from New York, New Orleans and San Francisco to major locations. Pages 53 and 56 are textual and explain "The System of United States Government Land Surveys." Page 54 and 55 is a colored "Map showing the Principal Meridians and Base Lines in the United States Governing U. S. Surveys also Showing the Belts of Standard Time" with 4 diagrams explaining numbering systems for townships, sections, and smaller divisions.
