A two-bladed windmill towers over a white, two-story farm house in this 3-1/4" x 2-1/8" black and white photograph. A second, smaller windmill stands in the background by the white barn. Small trees planted in a row divide the yard from a field.
Electric power lines didn't reach farms in outlying precincts until 1945-47 or later. Until then, some farmers made their own power with wind chargers, as in this picture, and stored excess power in glass batteries. This wind charger produced electricity of 32 volts for lights. The batteries were stored in the attic of the house.
